Time change mayhem has come and gone – it was refreshing to see almost sunlight at 0600 – most importantly – I have lights in my barn!!!
Hubby is brilliant – digging a trench and running wiring just was not going to happen this year – instead – two car batteries on a rotating basis with 12v lighting seems to do the trick. The water issue we have figured out.
It would seem that our cellar is incredibly warm so bring the hose in and uncoil it when needed – tedious? yes – impractical? totally but it will work and that is all that matters.
New topic…Friday at work I decided to skip eating at my desk (which I usually do) and eat in the kitchen – away from my computer and away from my phone. Gives me a chance to interact with the comings and goings of co-workers. One of my colleagues asked me how farm life was. With great exuberance I told him it was fantastic! – a lot of work and long days at times – I told him how my typical day started – up at 0445 – shower – have a coffee and the don coveralls and go feed the “boys” – finish getting ready for work and out the door by 0630.
Another colleague was in the kitchen at the time listening and asked me a question. The conversation sort of went like this:
Her – “No offence” – RED FLAG – any time anyone starts a conversation with “No offence” – I immediately go on alert – so the questions continued – sorry for the interruption – I’ll start over.
Her – “No offence – do you think it is wise to start this lifestyle at your age?!?!”
I paused – sat back – gathered my thoughts and answered quietly.
Me – “Exactly how old do you think I am???”
Others in the kitchen backed up – I guess I did not look as calm as I had thought.
Her – “Sorry sorry – but should you not be slowing down?” (she’s young) continues “Your kids are grown – you have more time on your hands now – why fill it with all that work? You can relax now – travel more and not have to worry about children.”
Me – “First – I always worry about my children – I always will no matter their age. Secondly – have you ever had a dream? – something you always wanted to do as long as you can remember?”…
Her – “Uh uh”…
I continued “This has been a dream of mine since I was a child – this has been a dream of ours for 13 years. When one gets to the advanced age that I am (smirk) – one does not simply sit on their ass watching television or jet off to parts unknown….:
Her – “uh uh”…
I continued ” I am in the best shape of my life – I sleep well everyday knowing that not only have I done a great job at work – but that I do a great job at home. This “work” that you refer to is an accomplishment of a lifelong dream – not everyone gets to see their dreams become reality and I have been fortunate enough to achieve that.”
Her – “But what about when you are like 65 – what will you do then?”
Me – “Shovel shit – play with horses – haul hay and sit on my porch – same thing I am doing now. I may be old – but I aint’ dead”
And with that I believe the conversation ended.
So – am I too old to have started this endeavour?
